Transforming the workforce


Challenge

It is recognised that demand for primary care services is increasing faster than capacity within the primary care workforce. The Primary Care Workforce Commission highlighted that new roles, new approaches to training, and better support are all required in order to safeguard primary care services for the future.

We worked with primary care and other community partners in south London as part of Health Education England’s programme to develop primary care training hubs. We have improved the capacity for training and development in Croydon and Sutton through multi-professional training events, increased placements for trainees, and innovative new kinds of shared learning across medical specialties.

We have helped the CCGs to understand and model their primary care workforce needs and have supported them to take on new roles including practice pharmacists, care coordinators and physician associates to help bridge the workforce gap.

Solution

  • We worked extensively with partners, in the community, including Sutton’s Vanguard team, the GP federations, secondary care and local education partners to create opportunities for workforce development and transformation
  • We undertook two annual planning rounds and designed an allocations methodology to identify and target areas of high need
  • We ran medical, clinical, and non-clinical training programmes and commissioned training in line with workforce needs and strategic priorities.

Result

  • We doubled the training capacity for medical and nursing undergraduates in order to secure the long-term workforce supply
  • Apprentices are now employed in 15 per cent of practices, which is helping to create new administrative capacity
  • We have commissioned more than 6,500 hours of student learning in Croydon alone
  • We have helped our customers to bid for and win funding to support innovative new development opportunities.
